Case Study: Empowering Charity Employees to Support Grief While Prioritising Self-Care
“I learned a huge amount in a short workshop and found myself immediately being a bit kinder to myself and those around me.”
The Problem: A charity supporting those in grief noticed that many employees, drawn to the work through personal loss, struggled to manage their own grief while helping others.
The charity wanted to ensure that employees could care for themselves while providing effective support to their grieving beneficiaries.
The Solution
We facilitated an interactive workshop titled “Supporting Myself and Others in Grief.” The workshop covered:
- The basics of grief, including psychoeducation on common grief models to help understand where individuals may be in their grieving process.
- Effective communication techniques, including what to say and avoid when supporting someone in grief.
- Strategies for self care and recognising personal boundaries when supporting others.
The Outcome
After the training, employees had a clearer understanding of how grief is experienced and could better support both themselves and others. They gained practical tools for managing grief-related conversations and felt more comfortable discussing grief with colleagues and beneficiaries. Employees also felt empowered to prioritise their own wellbeing, reducing the emotional toll of supporting others.
“The most helpful part of the workshop was learning the immediate things to consider when speaking with an employee who has had a bereavement.“
The Problem: A large corporate company with numerous call line employees found that staff members often struggled with how to respond to customers who were grieving, leading to feelings of uncertainty and discomfort in these conversations. The company needed a solution to equip their employees with the skills to manage these sensitive situations effectively.
The Solution: We delivered an online workshop titled “How to Support Those Experiencing Bereavement / Loss” for both call line employees and line managers. The workshop focused on key skills for engaging in difficult conversations, demonstrating empathy, and supporting individuals in grief. Topics included:
- Showing empathy and compassion to those in grief
- Key communication skills for handling sensitive discussions
- Exercises to build confidence when talking about grief, especially for those with no personal experience of loss
- Personal resilience techniques to support the wellbeing of employees
- How to signpost to external support resources
The training was designed to be engaging and accessible, breaking down heavy content to make it manageable for all participants.
The Outcome: Post-training, employees felt significantly more confident in responding to grieving customers, knowing what to say and how to offer support. They gained a deeper understanding of grief and were better equipped to handle emotional conversations, as well as manage their own emotional responses. The fear around talking about grief was removed, and staff felt more comfortable engaging with bereaved individuals.
“My team and I benefited greatly from authoritative and highly practical training.”
The Problem: The CEO of a fast-paced finance company reached out to address team conflict and improve resilience within the company. There were interpersonal tensions, and employees were struggling to communicate effectively under pressure. The CEO wanted to foster better communication and equip the team with strategies to navigate difficult conversations and maintain resilience in a stressful work environment.
The Solution: We delivered a 2-hour interactive workshop on “Resilience and Compassion in the Workplace.” The session included case studies, psychological theory, and practical exercises, aiming to help employees:
- Recognise common patterns of thoughts and behaviours when facing stress or conflict
- Develop skills for more productive and empathetic conversations
- Build personal resilience to handle the pressures of a demanding work culture
The Outcome: Attendees left the workshop with a clear understanding of how to handle workplace stress, manage conflicts more effectively, and communicate in a way that fosters collaboration. They also learned strategies to protect their mental health and prevent work-related stress from affecting their personal lives. The team felt more connected and understood each other’s perspectives better, leading to greater cohesion and productivity.
“I recommend it for anyone who wants to look after their team… while having the challenging conversations necessary to deliver positive change.”
