Volunteer

Charities are woven together by the dedication and passion of volunteers, who selflessly work towards creating a brighter, more compassionate world. It’s fair to say that we couldn’t do what we do in supporting thousands of people bereaved by cancer without the work of our incredible volunteers.

As a grass-roots organisation working hard to grow and support more people we are always interested in hearing from people who think they may have something to offer The Loss Foundation.Click on the roles and opportunities below for more information and details on how to join our Loss Foundation family.

If there is something you have in mind beyond those roles that may be helpful for our Vision of providing support for any adult bereaved by cancer in the UK, please do get in touch with our Director Erin at erin@thelossfoundation.org

Become a walking volunteer (National)

Overview

Our wonderful charity team is expanding and we are looking to take on more compassionate, reliable and conscientious volunteers with an interest in walking and helping others.

One of the most effective support events we provide is in the form of our short walking and talking get togethers for those who are grieving. We are increasing the number of locations we are running our in-person get togethers across the country and are recruiting some volunteers to help us do so.

We meet as a small group, grab a tea/coffee, and mosey along together. This could be in a local park, garden, museum, etc. It’s pretty simple but can be hugely cathartic and effective for those who are really struggling with their loss and feeling isolated. We are passionate about offering the best possible care to an often-ignored population.

Walk and Talk volunteer roles involve facilitating a social get together / walk for people whose loved ones have died from cancer or Covid-19. This largely involves being the meet and greet person for those attending. Volunteers are welcome to design the get together (choosing a location locally) or we can help you do so. The walks are very informal and relaxed, and are targeted at bringing people together rather than having to cover many miles. Get togethers normally last 1 hour.

Requirements and Commitment

We will provide full training for the role and supervision. We ask for at least a 1-year commitment, which involves facilitating up to 3-6 walks a year.

At our organisation, we believe in the reciprocity of volunteering. While we rely on dedicated volunteers to support our services, we also strive to make your experience meaningful and aligned with your career aspirations or personal values. We highly respect the commitments and priorities in your life, ensuring that your time spent volunteering is not only valuable to us but also beneficial for your own journey. We are mindful not to overburden your schedule, acknowledging the importance of a balanced and fulfilling volunteer experience.

Honorary Psychologists (National)

Overview

We recognise that those exploring a career in Psychology benefit from gaining work experience in various fields.

Our Honorary Psychologist role involves co-facilitating bereavement support groups and events for people whose loved ones have died from cancer; having supervision with our volunteer clinical psychologists, and contributing to the development and growth of the charity’s support. Training is provided in line with the Department of Health’s Standard of Care for Bereavement Support.

There are also opportunities to co-facilitate therapeutic services, such as therapy groups and clinical workshops. These would be co-facilitated with Clinical Psychologists, and would involve delivering some content and exercises. This is great experience for those wanting to gain work experience in the area of Psychology, and especially for those interested in Clinical Psychology.

We also provide opportunities to engage in research with our team, another key skill for those wanting to pursue a career in psychology. Our organisation is very keen to learn more about the impact of grief, to help illustrate the need for bereavement support, and to learn the benefits of our services, and because of this we engage in numerous research projects to learn more about this. Successful candidates will be able to get involved in research if that is an interest of theirs.

Team members will receive scheduled supervision from Clinical Psychologists, as well as continued training and CPD opportunities relevant to those who are keen to pursue careers in psychology.
