Depression is a condition that can affect anyone, with certain factors or experiences increasing the likelihood of its occurrence, such as the loss of a loved one in the case of bereavement.
It’s crucial to recognize that overwhelming sadness following a bereavement is a natural and entirely appropriate response given the circumstances.
Distinguishing between deep sadness and depression can be challenging, as the line is somewhat blurred. However, there are specific “symptoms” associated with depression that distinguish it from overwhelming sadness. These experiences typically include diminished interest in once-enjoyed activities or hobbies, changes in appetite or weight, thoughts of suicide, troubled sleep, low energy and challenges concentrating, with the majority of these things lasting beyond a few weeks.
Watch our short video to learn more about depression and how to support yourself in it.
Does it make a significant difference whether you label it as sadness or depression? Not necessarily. However, seeking support becomes crucial if the ‘symptoms’ persist over an extended period, as this can potentially lead to additional challenges and experiences.
If you find yourself grappling with any of the above over a prolonged period of time and you are concerned about your mood, we recommend speaking with your GP to explore the support options available to you. You can also visit our Signposting page to learn about alternative support options.
