Understanding Shock in Early Grief

Understanding Shock in Early Grief

One of the first experiences in grief is often shock – that inner voice saying, “No. This cannot be real.” In a single moment, your world can feel completely changed. Shock can feel strangely calm, or utterly overwhelming – both are normal. It’s your mind’s way of protecting you while it tries to catch up with reality.

If you’re in this stage, there’s no need to force yourself to “process” the loss. Sometimes your only job is to get through the next hour… or even the next breath. Grief doesn’t follow a timeline, so take it slowly. One breath at a time is enough for today.
