Join Our Volunteer Family at The Loss Foundation

Could you help someone experiencing grief feel less alone?

At The Loss Foundation, our volunteers make an enormous difference. They create welcoming, compassionate spaces where people who have lost someone they love can connect, share experiences and feel understood.

As we look ahead to 2027, we’re excited to welcome new volunteers to our community. We’re currently recruiting for two opportunities: Online Bereavement Support Group Facilitators and Walk & Talk Hosts.

Online Bereavement Support Group Facilitators

Our online bereavement support groups are our most popular events, bringing together people from across the UK who have experienced the death of a loved one from cancer.

The feedback we receive is incredibly positive, with attendees regularly telling us how much it means to connect with others who understand their experiences, without judgement or expectations.

We’re looking for compassionate, organised and reliable people to join our team of volunteer facilitators and help us continue providing these much-valued spaces.

What would you be doing?

As a volunteer facilitator, you’ll help run online support groups alongside other trained volunteers. You’ll welcome attendees, guide conversations where needed and help create a safe, supportive environment where everyone feels heard and respected.

You don’t need to be a counsellor or psychologist. We’ll provide comprehensive training, opportunities to observe experienced facilitators and ongoing guidance and supervision from a clinical psychologist.

You’ll become part of a supportive volunteer community, develop valuable skills and, most importantly, play a direct role in helping people experiencing grief feel supported, connected and less alone.

The commitment
We’re looking for volunteers who can facilitate approximately 1-2 online groups per month and commit to volunteering with us for a minimum of 2 years. This helps us provide consistent, reliable support to the people who attend our groups.

Walk & Talk Hosts

Sometimes, connecting with others feels easier when you’re walking side by side.

Our Walk & Talk events offer people experiencing bereavement the opportunity to meet others in a relaxed, informal setting, enjoy some fresh air and build connections with people in their local community.

We’re looking for friendly, compassionate people across the UK who would enjoy bringing others together by hosting local walks.

What would you be doing?

As a Walk & Talk host, you’ll lead informal walks in your local area, welcoming attendees and creating a friendly atmosphere where people can chat, connect and feel part of a community.

You don’t need any specialist qualifications or previous experience. We’ll provide training and support to help you plan and host your walks.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to get outdoors, meet new people and make a meaningful difference in your local community.

The commitment
We’re looking for people who can host several walks throughout the year, helping us create regular opportunities for people experiencing grief to connect locally.

Who can volunteer?

You don’t need to have experienced bereavement yourself to volunteer with us. We’re looking for people who are compassionate, reliable, good listeners and genuinely interested in supporting others.

If you have experienced a bereavement yourself, we ask that at least 2 years have passed since your loss before you begin volunteering. This is an important part of looking after our volunteers’ wellbeing, as supporting others through grief can sometimes bring up feelings about our own experiences.

Above all, we want our volunteers to feel supported, valued and part of a community that cares about the difference they’re making.

How to apply

We’re recruiting now for volunteers who can join us in the new year.

  • Applications: Open until 4th December 2026
  • Interviews: January 2027

To apply, please email your CV and a short covering letter to our Volunteer and Support Services Lead, Tuesday, at tuesday@thelossfoundation.org.

In your covering letter, please tell us a little about yourself, why you’d like to volunteer with The Loss Foundation and which opportunity you’re interested in.

If you’re applying to become a Walk & Talk host, please also let us know which town or area you’d like to host walks in.

Together, we can help more people experiencing grief feel understood, supported and less alone.
